Behind every flight lies a face, behind every exile a fate. In a historic residential building in Berlin, the Exilemuseum tells stories of loss and new beginnings, uncertainty and departure, persecution and survival. The museum sheds light on exile during the Nazi era and today, and invites visitors to reflect on the fragility of freedom and democracy in Germany and around the world.

The Exilmuseum will soon open at Fasanenstraße 24 in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Renovations are currently being planned to make the building accessible with minimal barriers for everyone. In the immediate vicinity of Kurfürstendamm, the Literaturhaus and numerous art galleries, an international venue is being created with historical exhibitions, contemporary interventions and a diverse programme for visitors of all ages.

Sharing stories: Historical biographies are made tangible through artistic, multimedia, participatory and other innovative formats. In addition to tourists and specialist audiences, the museum also addresses people who have previously had little contact with historical-political education or the culture of remembrance.

Connecting: Life in exile is always connected to at least two countries. This international perspective shapes the Exilmuseum. The “Embassies of Exile” programme creates new partnerships and a global network.

Discovering: A wide-ranging programme for school classes enables children and young people to engage with biographies of exile during the Nazi era and relate them to experiences from their own lives. In addition, the Exile Museum is establishing a publicly accessible research library on the subject of exile. It comprises historical sources, academic literature, new publications and children’s books, and will become a central point of contact for research, education and outreach.
