The library is a centerpiece of the future museum – a place that foregrounds people as authors, publishers, and collectors. The library invites visitors to linger and reflect in the historic rooms of the city villa, to revisit the impressions of their museum visit, and to exchange ideas.
The holdings consist of various private collections:
Claus-Dieter Krohn Collection
At the beginning of 2018, around 5,000 volumes and original writings on German-language exile came to the Exilmuseum from the private collection of the German historian and exile researcher Claus-Dieter Krohn (1941–2019). What makes this collection special is its rich supplementary materials (such as newspaper articles and letters) and Krohn’s handwritten annotations within the works.
Andreas Landshoff Collection
More than 600 books, including numerous first editions, come from the estate of Andreas Landshoff (1930–2021), the son of the exile publisher Fritz Landshoff. They were donated to the Exilmuseum. The holdings include valuable first editions, some with dedications, from the exile publishing houses Querido, Allert de Lange, and Bermann-Fischer. These form a separate special collection within the Landshoff Collection.
Inge Deutschkron Collection
A small collection comes from the private possessions of the German-Israeli journalist and author Inge Deutschkron (1922–2022).
Florian Illies Collection
The renowned author Florian Illies gave the Exilmuseum research literature and material relating to his literary non-fiction book "When the Sun Sets" about the Mann family’s experience of exile and the summer of 1933 in Sanary-sur-Mer.
The holdings are currently being catalogued and systematized in order to make them accessible to the public.
