A special evening in the garden at the Exilmuseum: We opened our museum and garden to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) Germany. IRC’s roots go back to the 1930s and 1940s, to Albert Einstein, Varian Fry and many other supporters who worked to rescue people fleeing the Nazis. This gave rise to the IRC, which today supports people in emergency situations in more than 40 countries. In this way, the history of exile is connected with the questions of the present.
It was a great pleasure that the former British Foreign Secretary and President of IRC, David Miliband, travelled to attend the occasion. Together with the country representative of IRC Germany, Lena Görgen, and Ruth Ur, Director of the Exilmuseum, he welcomed the guests.
The contributions to the programme by people for whom exile is lived experience were particularly moving: a poetry reading by Afghan poet Nadia Feyzi and a personal speech by IRC staff member Majdi Laktinah. We were also especially delighted that presenter Hadnet Tesfai guided us through the evening. Many thanks to everyone involved and to all our guests.
